License renewal 

• Step 1: Check if you meet the Requirements 
  - Your current driver’s license was issued after October 1, 2006.
  - You have an activated DigiD app or can log in with your ID card or driver’s license.
  - You have a CBR Health Declaration (if required).
  For a first driver’s license, an urgent application, or if your driver’s license is lost, you can visit City Hall by appointment. 
   
• Step 2: Get a passport photo
  Have a passport photo taken by a certified photographer and bring your driver’s license with you.
  The photographer will send your passport photo and signature digitally to the RDW.
  Within a few minutes, you will receive an email from the RDW stating whether your renewal application has been approved. 
   
• Step 3: Apply for a renewal
  Next, apply for a renewal of your driver’s license online.
  You will need a DigiD to do this. At the end of your application, you will pay the fees via iDeal.

• Step 4: Pick up your driver’s license (no appointment needed)
  You will receive an email from the RDW when your driver’s license is ready.
  This usually takes 2 business days.
  You can then pick up your driver’s license without an appointment during town hall hours. Do this within 3 months; otherwise, you will need to submit a new application. Don’t forget to bring your current driver’s license with you.

Expanding categories 

• Step 1: Check if you meet the Requirements
  - Your current driver's license was issued after October 1, 2006.
  - You have an activated DigiD app or can log in with identity card or driver's license.
  - You have a Health Statement from the CBR (if you need one).
  For a first driver's license, emergency application or if your driver's license is missing, you can visit the town hall by appointment.
   
• Step 2: passport photo
  Take a passport photo at a recognized photographer and bring your driver's license with you.
  The photographer sends your passport photo and signature digitally to the RDW.
  Within minutes, you will receive an e-mail from the RDW stating whether your category extension has been approved.
   
• Step 3: Request additional category(ies)
  Then apply online to the RDW to add categories to your driver’s license.
  You will need a DigiD for this. At the end of your application, pay the fees via iDEAL | Wero.

• Step 4: Collect your driver's license (no appointment necessary)
  You will receive an email from the RDW when your driver's license is ready.
  This is usually two working days later.
  You can then collect your driver's license without an appointment during the town hall's opening hours. Do this within three months, otherwise you will have to submit a new application. Don't forget to bring your current driver's license with you.

Rush request 

Driving licenses applied for urgently before 2:30 p.m. can usually be picked up the next working day without an appointment (officially this is 48 hours). You pay an additional €39.65 for this. 

This is not possible online but only at the City Hall counter. Make an appointment for this by phone at 0499-491491. 

License renewal/category extension at the counter

Renewing your driver's license or expanding your categories is also possible by appointment at the City Hall front desk. Your new driving license will be ready 5 working days later.

Driving license validity

A standard moped or car license is basically valid for 10 years. This changes from your 65th birthday or when you need a medical examination: 

• 65-70 years: your driver's license is renewed until your 75th birthday 
• 70-75 years: your license will be renewed for 5 years 
• from 75 years of age: your driving license remains valid for up to 5 years (depending on medical examination) 
• all ages: in case of mandatory medical examination due to illness: depending on the examination
