Applying for your first driver's license

Apply for driver's license (by appointment)

• First driver's license: phone appointment
  - A first driver's license cannot be applied for online.
  - Please call us for an appointment. We will try to accommodate you the next business day.

• Bring to the appointment:
  - color passport photo: no older than six months + meets passport photo requirements
  - valid ID
  - cash/debit card: you pay when you apply
  - under 18 years of age: a supervisor pass (to be requested via 2todrive) 

Driver's license pickup (without appointment)

5 business days after the application, you can pick up your driver's license at City Hall.
Please note: pick up your driver's license within 3 months, otherwise you will have to reapply for a driver's license.

Opening hours for pickup 

You do not need to make an appointment to pick up your driver's license.
Except for special/holidays, this can be done during our regular opening hours:

• Monday: 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• Tuesday: 08.30-17.00
• Wednesday: 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. 
• Thursday: 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. 
• Friday: 8:30am-12:30pm

Rush request 

Driving licenses applied for urgently before 2:30 p.m. can usually be picked up the next working day (officially this is 48 hours). This is not possible online but only at the counter. Make an appointment by calling 0499-491491. For an urgent request, you pay €39.65 extra.

Change appointment

Changing/canceling an appointment can be done via the confirmation email you automatically receive after making an appointment.

License renewal/category extension at the counter

Is it not an initial application but a renewal or category extension of your current driver's license? Then this is also possible by appointment at the counter of the town hall. Your new license will then be ready 5 working days later. 

Bring with you to the appointment:
- color passport photo: not older than six months + meets the passport photo requirements
- valid identification document
- money/pin card: you pay at the time of application 

License renewal/category extension

• Option A: arrange digitally without an appointment
  Easily arrange the renewal/extension yourself online, without an appointment.
  Your driver's license will be ready after 2 business days.
   
• Option B: arrange at the counter, by appointment
  Of course, you can also visit the counter at the town hall to renew/extend your driver's license. 
  The application is by appointment, but you can pick it up without an appointment. Your driver's license will be ready after 5 working days.

Driving license validity

A standard moped or car license is basically valid for 10 years. This changes from your 65th birthday or when you need a medical examination: 

• 65-70 years: your driver's license is renewed until your 75th birthday 
• 70-75 years: your license will be renewed for 5 years 
• from 75 years of age: your driving license remains valid for up to 5 years (depending on medical examination) 
• all ages: in case of mandatory medical examination due to illness: depending on the examination
