Prioritizing Applications for Grid Capacity in Housing Development Projects
Due to congestion on the power grid, there is insufficient capacity in many areas for new or higher-capacity connections. As a result, educational and residential construction projects may be delayed because sufficient grid capacity is not immediately available.
To ensure that important social developments can still move forward, nationwide priority rules for applications for transportation capacity have been in effect since July 1, 2026. Education and housing projects fall under the “basic needs” category and may therefore be given priority over other applications.
New Opportunity for Municipalities
Starting October 1, 2026, municipalities will be able to take advantage of the “Early Application in the Planning Process” program. This allows municipalities to apply for transportation capacity for educational and housing projects at an early stage, even before a final connection is requested.
To enable the use of this program, the municipality of Son en Breugel has established policy guidelines. These guidelines outline how educational and housing projects are evaluated and the order in which they are considered for prioritization.
How does the municipality determine the order?
The municipality compiles a list based on a number of criteria. Among other things, it considers:
- the planned start of construction
- the extent to which a project is ready from a planning and legal standpoint
- the social significance of the project
- the expected completion date
This approach ensures that projects are evaluated in a transparent and equitable manner.
Service Area of the Best High-Voltage Substation
Part of Son en Breugel is connected to the Best high-voltage substation. This substation also serves other areas, namely the municipalities of Best and Oirschot. The available grid capacity is therefore shared within a larger service area, which means that these three municipalities establish a joint priority list, each based on the same policy guidelines.
