DigiDRegistering marriage/registered partnership

(Your reservation is not final until you receive a confirmation of this by mail)

Notification of intended marriage/partnership

  • Register your marriage/registered partnership in the municipality where the ceremony will take place.
  • If this is in Son en Breugel then you can notify us online. In the online form you can indicate your preferences (date, location, time).
  • If you do not live in the Netherlands then your notification will go through the municipality of The Hague
  • Until 2015, this notification was done in person and was called betrothal. Today's "notification of intended marriage/partnership" is done digitally in most cases.

Number of witnesses

Witnesses must be present at a marriage and a registered partnership.

  • Together, you choose a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 4 witnesses.
  • Your witnesses must be 18 years of age or older.

Marriage/partnership as a non-Dutch national

Do you want to report a proposed marriage/partnership, but 1 of both partners does not have the Dutch nationality? Then additional physical documents are required that cannot be submitted online. The documents required vary per situation.

Contact us by phone at 0499 491 491 or email burgerzaken@sonenbreugel.nl so we can review with you what you need.

Required with your application

To notify your intended marriage or registered partnership online, you and your partner need DigiD. If you do not yet have a DigiD, apply for one first via the DigiD website.

Please have the following information handy with your report :

  • Valid identification of both partners,
  • valid identification of the witnesses
(identity card, passport or Dutch driver's license),
  • date and time,
  • wedding venue.

Please note that the date is not final until you receive the confirmation letter in the mail from us.

Converting registered partnership to marriage

  • A registered partnership can be converted to marriage at no cost.
  • The other way around (from marriage to partnership) is not possible.
  • Both partners must attend the appointment in person.
  • No witnesses are required at a conversion.
  • A conversion is possible in any Dutch municipality.
  • If you would still like a ceremony with speech in the presence of friends and family, this is possible. You will pay the regular wedding/partnership fee for this.

Make an appointment by phone at 0499-491491 (ask for the civic affairs back office), or email burgerzaken@sonenbreugel.nl.
