Public green spaces, maintenance
Directly regulate
What is it?
The municipality's field service, with its own neighborhood teams and hired green space contractors, takes care of the maintenance of public green spaces. In addition to maintenance throughout the year, there are also activities, which recur annually in a certain period, such as the leaf campaign (clearing away fallen leaves) and pruning in the parks.
What to do.
Pruning policy
In the spring, we get the green spaces ready for the growing season. One of the care measures in this process is pruning the plantings where needed. The winter period, prior to the bird nesting season, is the period from November through mid-March that is most appropriate for pruning and thinning.
Green Policy Plan
The city council works with a green policy plan. With such a plan, the city council establishes the main lines for the management of public green spaces for the longer term (10 years). The green policy plan includes how we deal with permits for cutting down trees and with ownership and management of green spaces.
Leaf litter
Every autumn, many people are inconvenienced by falling leaves. To reduce the nuisance and unsafety, the municipality then launches the leaf campaign. From late October until Christmas, leaves are removed from the approximately 15,000 street trees on main roads, bicycle paths and in the neighborhoods.
Removing the leaves contributes to road safety and prevents clogging of street gullies. We start by removing fallen leaves along main roads and major bicycle paths, and then work down residential streets, lawns and parks. Fallen leaves are good fertilizer for soil life in borders, so we leave the leaves there. From woodland plants, leaves are cleared only at the edges adjacent to roads.
