Appointed Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion
On Thursday, Sept. 18, 2025, Mayor Suzanne Otters-Bruijnen presented a special royal award to a fellow townsman with an extensive and impressive record of service.
The mayor presented him with the award following his farewell speech as professor at TU/e.
Throughout his career, Mr. Peter de With has made top achievements in the field of science with great significance for society. He has built important bridges between science and industry, linking fundamental research with practical applications. His work demonstrates both scientific depth and societal commitment.
Peter de With studied Electrical Engineering at TU Eindhoven and received his PhD from TU Delft in 1992. From 1984 to 1997 he conducted research on video compression and was senior TV system architect at Philips Research. He then was a professor at the University of Mannheim (Germany) from 1997 to 2000. In 2000, he joined LogicaCMG as a principal consultant and was also appointed part-time Professor of Video Coding and Architectures at TU Eindhoven. Between 2008 and 2010, he was Vice President Video (Analysis) Technology at Cyclomedia Technology. In 2011 followed his appointment as full-time professor at TU Eindhoven. He was also scientific director of the Institute Care and Cure Technology (C3Te) and theme leader Smart Diagnosis within the strategic research program SA Health.
Since 2000, he has led the Video Coding & Architectures (SPS-VCA) group at TU Eindhoven, which focuses on video and image signal processing, signal transformation, feature analysis and machine learning techniques, with applications in healthcare, security and automotive, among others.
He has been closely involved in numerous European projects on video analysis, behavioral recognition and object detection, working with, among others, the Port of Rotterdam, the Ministry of Defense, Bosch Security Systems, TKH Security and ViNotion.
In medical imaging, he led initiatives with regional and national hospitals, including for early detection of oncological diseases. Esophageal cancer research has gained international recognition.
Professor De With is an active and respected member of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences. A society founded in 1752 to bridge the gap between science and society. He is an honorary member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has (co-)authored more than 700 scientific publications on video compression, video analysis, system architectures and 3D processing. He has received several awards, including the Chester Sall Award, the SPlE Paper Award and the Elsevier Journal Award. He holds approximately 30 patents.
As a professor, Peter de With is an inspiration and mentor. He supervised more than 30 PhD students. Many of them now hold key positions in science and business. He challenges young researchers to connect their knowledge with social issues. He has also volunteered for national and international committees, grant competitions and professional associations.
Professor De With has made a name for himself as an international expert in video compression and image and video analysis for applications in healthcare, surveillance and multimedia, among others. His contributions have led to innovations in medical imaging, camera surveillance, industrial automation and consumer electronics.
