Winter festivals, from Saint Martin's Day to Carnival. 

Why do we eat speculaas at St. Nicholas and put up a tree with baubles in our house at Christmas. Why do we set off fireworks on New Year's Eve and take a dip in cold water on New Year's Day? Why do we dress up at Carnival and end with herring? All of this has a meaning. All winter festivals have a historical story. In this lecture, Ineke explains where winter traditions and rituals come from.
