F58 Bicycle Route

A safe and comfortable bike route

The F58 is a through-route bicycle path from Tilburg to Laarbeek. On April 1, 2026, the official go-ahead was given for construction inSon en Breugel. Preparations have begun. On this page, you can read about the benefits of the route, where it will run, and what to expect.

What's the benefit?

  • Cycling to work, school, or an appointment is getting easier.
  • You can continue cycling safely and comfortably.
  • Cycling is increasingly becoming a good alternative to driving.
  • The F58 connects to other cycling routes in Brabant.

Where does the route go?

The route runs from Tilburg to Laarbeek, passing through Eindhoven, Best, Nuenen, and Son en Breugel, among other places. Within our municipality, the F58 runs largely along the Wilhelmina Canal.

How does this affect you?

Do you live or work near the route? If so, you may experience temporary detours, changes in access, or noise during construction. We will notify residents and businesses directly affected in advance.

When does what happen?

  1. Next: We'll continue to refine the design and the scope of work. We'll begin the permitting process.
  2. Spring 2027: We will begin the bidding process.
  3. Start of construction: We expect to begin construction in mid-2027.
  4. Route ready: We plan to have the route operational after the summer of 2028.

Who is working on it?

In this project, the municipality of Son en Breugel is collaborating with the province of North Brabant, the Eindhoven Metropolitan Region (MRE), and neighboring municipalities. The municipality of Son en Breugel is working with a contractor on the construction of the F58. The contractor will be selected through a competitive bidding process.

Good to know

The F58 is part of a larger network of high-speed bike routes in Brabant. Work is currently underway on the section shown in the image: on the north side, from the lift bridge in the center of Son to the Houtens Bridge. On the south side, the route runs along the Wilhelmina Canal to the border of the municipality of Best, where it connects to Best’s through-route. The remaining section of the route toward Laarbeek will be constructed in a later phase.

Questions and Answers

What is the F58 bike route?

The F58 is a regional through-route for cyclists that connects various municipalities in Brabant. The route is designed to allow cyclists to cover longer distances quickly, safely, and comfortably, for example, for commuting. The F58 runs between Tilburg and Laarbeek.

Will there be a new bike path?

There is already a bike path at this location. The project aims to improve the existing bike route so that it becomes part of the F58 through-route.

So what exactly is changing?

The existing bike route will be modified where necessary to better meet the requirements of a through-route. This includes a more comfortable layout, better connections to other bike routes, and a route that allows cyclists to ride through more safely and quickly.

Why is this route becoming a through-cycling route?

The municipality, the province, and neighboring municipalities want to make cycling a more attractive alternative to driving. A better-connected bicycle network will encourage more people to choose to bike to work or for other trips.

Will the bike path be wider than the one that's there now?

Yes, the bike path is being widened to make the route better suited for larger numbers of cyclists and different types of bikes, such as e-bikes.

Will the route become safer?

Yes. An important goal of a through-route for cyclists is to improve traffic safety. Better connections allow cyclists to use the route more comfortably and safely.

Will there be more cyclists on this route?

That is certainly the expectation. Thanks to improved connections and good links to regional bike routes, cycling is becoming an attractive alternative to driving for more people, especially for distances that can be easily covered by e-bike or regular bike.

Will this affect car traffic?

The construction of a through-route for cyclists is intended to encourage bicycle use. On a short stretch of the route, there is a residence with an existing access point onto the current bike path. To ensure that this residence remains accessible, this section will be designed as a “cars as guests” street.

Why is the municipality investing in a through-cycle route?

The region is growing rapidly. To maintain accessibility, alternatives to driving are needed. Investing in better bike routes makes it easier to choose to bike.

When will the work begin?

Preparations are currently underway for the construction of the F58 in Son en Breugel. As soon as the work schedule is finalized, it will be shared through the municipality’s communication channels.

Why is the municipality investing in this route when there’s already a bike path?

There is already a bike path at this location. The investment by the municipality of Son en Breugel is intended to improve the existing route and integrate it into the F58 regional bike route.

However, the municipality has made a conscious decision to invest in a regional bike route that offers residents an attractive alternative to driving, especially for commuting and other daily trips.

In addition, traffic volume in the region is increasing. By improving the bicycle network and better connecting it to surrounding municipalities, more people will be encouraged to use bicycles or e-bikes. This will help improve the region’s accessibility.
