Temporary municipal shelter (TGO) in Son en Breugel

The municipality of Son and Breugel is going to realize a Temporary Municipal Reception Location (TGO) at the location Ekkersrijt 6040. A maximum of 200 asylum seekers will be accommodated there. It is a temporary reception of up to six months. COA will pay the total costs for this reception.

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) has a severe shortage of reception locations and a crisis situation has been going on for a long time. The Commissioner of the King, on behalf of the State, has made an urgent appeal to municipalities to provide temporary shelter for asylum seekers.

In the college meeting of June 11, 2024, it was decided to respond to this and contribute, from a humanitarian point of view, to the temporary reception of asylum seekers in need of protection.

All the people who are received in the TGO have been registered in Ter Apel and are in the asylum procedure. They are awaiting the course of that procedure. The composition of the group of asylum seekers, who are being accommodated, is not yet known.

An environmental permit is needed to realize the shelter. The procedure for this is starting now. The site is expected to be ready to receive the asylum seekers by mid-July.

The municipality facilitates the shelter location. Management of the reception location is done by a professional, experienced organization. There is close cooperation with COA and social partners.

Safety and livability for the asylum seekers and the environment are important concerns. Among other things, day care is organized at the location. Security is present in the building 24/7. For the safety of the asylum seekers there will be access control at the location and agreements will be made with the police about enforcement.
