Roman Catholic Saint Geneva Church
National Monument
Breugel already had a small church in 1320. At the beginning of the 15th century, a new presbytery was built. Then, in the middle of the 15th century, a new church in Gothic style was built to this presbytery. In 1960, the transept, which had been demolished in 1822, was rebuilt. In the process, the entire cemetery surrounding the church was cleared in 1960.
On November 9, 1800, the original needle spire blew off the tower during a storm and crashed into the church. By 1804, everything had been repaired. In 1820, the current low spire was installed. The church tower has transverse buttresses on the west side and a wide stair tower on the south side. The organ dates from 1854. The original stained glass windows were restored in 2023. Next to the church is the new cemetery. A beautiful Calvary group adorns the entrance. The cemetery is still in use. Along the street is the Sacred Heart statue, made in 1927 by J. Custers of Eindhoven. The interior is definitely worth a look.
