Environment, permit or notification

What is it?

As a business owner, you must comply with environmental regulations. For certain activities that affect the environment, you must apply for an environmental permit or file a report.

Are you starting a new business or changing or expanding an existing business? Then you can do a permit check via the online Omgevingsloket online. You will then see whether you need to apply for a permit or make a notification.

Environmental Rules

Environmental rules you must comply with include:

  • processing of waste
  • noise level of your company
  • use of energy
  • pollution of water, soil and air

What to do.

  1. An environmental permit for an environmental activity is a decision by the municipality (or another government body) in which the municipality (or another government body) grants the applicant (usually a company) permission to do something that is normally prohibited under the Environmental Management Act.
  2. Regulations are attached to an environmental permit in the interest of protecting the environment.
  3. Acting without an environmental permit and acting in violation of the permit is punishable.
  4. You can check whether you need an environmental permit for an environmental activity by doing the permit check. You can do this through the Omgevingsloket.

General environmental rules may apply to your industry under the Environmental Management (General Rules for Establishments) Decree (BARIM), or Activities Decree for short, and a notification will suffice. By means of a questionnaire you can see whether you need to submit a notification for the establishment and/or change of your company.

For an environmental permit application for environmental activity, you can choose private or business. You can submit the application, with the attachments, digitally via the Omgevingsloket, or you can print a paper version and send it to the municipality by mail or hand it in at the reception desk in the town hall.

You can apply for an environmental activity permit online.
To do so, you need DigiD (individuals) or eHerkenning (companies).

Before applying, you can do the permit check. You can find this at www.omgevingsloket.nl/vergunningencheck. This check shows whether or not you need a permit. You may also need one or more partial permits, such as demolition, building or felling, in addition to environmental permits. You can submit these applications together in a single application. If you want to submit an environmental notification together with other activities requiring an environmental permit, such as building, the notification will be included in the application for an environmental permit for the subactivities in question.

To prevent us from not processing your application or denying you a permit, it is important to properly discuss your plans in advance. This important stage in the procedure is called preliminary consultation. Therefore, if you have business plans at the earliest possible stage, contact your environmental case manager at the municipality, Mr. Jan van den Braak: (0499) 491 491.
