This monument commemorates the airborne landings by the ^101st Airborne Division on Sept. 17, 1944, in this area as part of Operation Market Garden. Nearly 7,000 paratroopers were dropped here on that day and hundreds of gliders landed here with army equipment. The landing area extended over the entire open area to the left of the A50 highway, as well as on the east side of the same highway, where the residential areas of Sonniuspark and De Gentiaan are now located.
