City Hall

Municipal monument

The Town Hall of Son en Breugel is located in the center of Son en Breugel. The original main building, designed by the architects C.G. Geenen and L.R.T. Oskam from Eindhoven, was realized between 1963 and 1965. It is a special example of a town hall in modern style from the reconstruction period (1945-1965). The building symbolizes the post-war decentralization and democratization of local government. It is the architectural translation of the image of more openness and accessibility, as the local government wanted to propagate in the 1960s.

The town hall is a special example of postwar modernism, recognizable by its functional design and the use of modern materials and techniques, such as the concrete skeleton and steel curtain walls. Particularly valuable is the particularization of the council chamber within the design. The concrete pylons, the yellow brick, the natural stone frame and the glass curtain wall of the council chamber give the town hall its characteristic appearance. The town hall forms an important object within the oeuvre of Geenen and Oskam because of its modern open appearance combined with its expressive design. The town hall is also of art historical value due to the mosaics in the council chamber and the brick relief at the entrance, both by the Sonian artist Theo van Amstel.
