Son and Breugel municipality commits to future for Ekkersrijt business park: Energy Hub study launched

Electricity is the engine of sustainability for Bedrijventerrein Ekkersrijt. The current congestion problem is an obstacle to the future development of Bedrijventerrein Ekkersrijt. The Municipality of Son and Breugel has selected Enerzien and Simpl Energy to conduct an exploratory study for the realization of a collective energy hub to help the companies. This also fits with the agreements made in the project 'Grote Oogst'.

Together for a future-proof region

Business Park Ekkersrijt, located in Son en Breugel, represents a strategic hub within Brainport, one of the leading technology regions in Europe. Driven by the ambition to create a future-proof region, the Municipality of Son and Breugel has embarked on a comprehensive sustainability initiative for Ekkersrijt. For example, on March 20, 2023, the declaration of intent for sustainability was signed from the joint effort to accelerate the sustainability of the business park, known as the 'Great Harvest' project. Despite these promising sustainability initiatives, the region is currently facing a challenge that puts not only sustainability but also future business activity at risk. These pressures are created by grid congestion, the inability to withdraw and deliver electricity to the grid at the desired time. This not only hinders the sustainability of individual business locations, but also threatens the realization of future-proof business activity, and has an impact on the attractiveness of Ekkersrijt as a business location for innovative companies.

Integral study for collective energy hub

To address this issue, an integrated study is being launched, with a focus on providing action perspectives for individual companies and on the possibility of realizing a collective energy hub at Ekkersrijt. To select parties, a tender process took place in which the combined offer of Enerzien and Simpl Energy was chosen. "An extensive and intensive selection process took place in which the municipality searched for parties that can come up with targeted solutions in a short period of time to our entrepreneurs at Ekkersrijt. In order to give perspective in times of grid congestion." said Alderman Boersma of the Municipality of Son and Breugel. For the Municipality of Son and Breugel, it was important to select parties who are regionally connected, who deliver, who are strong in terms of content and who go for optimal results for both the individual company and the collective.

Work started

Enerzien and Simpl Energy are delighted with the award of this contract. "With this contract we can offer the participating parties at Ekkersrijt at least action perspective for the short and long term. This contributes to the objectives of the Municipality of Son and Breugel" said Rick Peters (Enerzien). Tom Selten of Simpl Energy adds "especially because with our software we can support the individual companies in controlling their solar panels, charging stations and battery systems as well as providing insight into the current and future total electricity consumption of the business park".

The participating parties have been informed. Enerzien and Simpl Energy have started work. Final results are expected no later than the beginning of the4th quarter 2024 and presented to participating companies and interested parties.
