Ekkersrijt in the new: colorful greenery at the furniture mall!
Along road 4000 in Ekkersrijt, near IKEA and the furniture stores, the public space was given a major makeover last year. What used to be a rather anonymous green strip is now colorful, with biodiverse planting. It is a real makeover for the business park!
What exactly happened?
Perennials have been planted according to the Green-to-Colour principle: a design that is not only beautiful, but also attractive to insects when it is well dense. Easy to maintain and resistant to dry and wet periods.
Why this renovation?
We want to make Ekkersrijt not only a place where you can store or work, but also a pleasant and green environment. With this project we invest in biodiversity, climate resilience, health and a neat appearance of the public space.
Who worked on it?
Multiple parties made this project possible.
- The municipality of Son and Breugel as principal.
- BeheerAccent, which drafted the RAW specifications.
- Landscape architect Marcel van Wezel (Zichtlijn). He designed the plantings.
- Contractor Lux Cernit handled the construction.
In good cooperation, this beautiful result was achieved.
We experienced the cooperation with the municipality of Son and Breugel as very pleasant. Together we drew up a clear and lucid RAW specification with which the renovation of the greenery on the furniture boulevard in Ekkersrijt was carried out''. - Evert Jan van de Kamp, Project Manager/Advisor, BeheerAccent
When did this happen?
Work was carried out in the second half of 2024 and early 2025. The project was completed in March 2025.
And what about maintenance?
This too has been considered. Every spring, in March, the perennials are "mulched": that is, cut in small pieces, leaving this clippings on the ground. This provides nutrition for the soil, suppresses weeds and stimulates soil life - all in line with natural and sustainable management.
What do you see now?
The photos, taken on April 01 and on May 21, 2025, show well how the new greenery is developing. And the first users have already found it: bees have been spotted in abundance and are enthusiastically using the flowery plantings.
