Dommelhuis
Municipal monument
Built in 1959-1960 as Petrus' Banden Church, designed by architectural firm Geenen and Oskam of Eindhoven. The building was very special for that time because until then no concrete structure had existed with such a large cantilever span (20 meters). The supporting pillars are entirely at the front and rear of the 30-meter-deep, 40-meter-wide, 11-meter-high church.
The unusual brick relief on the facade is by Leo Geurtjens and refers to the apostle Peter, the first pope. From left to right: Tiara and the key, Peter with cupped hands freed from the bonds (shackles), Peter handcuffed in front of the inverted cross and finally Fish caught in Peter's net.
In December 2017, the building was withdrawn from Catholic worship.
Due to the finding of a bat at the very last mass, a demolition suspension through the administrative court (in January 2018) until after hibernation and the subsequent municipal elections (in March 2018) resulting in a new coalition, it was saved from demolition and transformed in 2021-2022 into a multifunctional accommodation to (in an election winning) design by architectural firm INBO with now almost 15 permanent users. On July 8, 2022, it was officially inaugurated as "Dommelhuis.
Note the foundation stone in the lower right corner of the front facade, laid on Aug. 1, 1959.
