The bucket test

Test soil permeability with the bucket test

  1. Dig a hole 30 centimeters deep.
  2. Fill this hole with a ± 10-liter bucket of water.
  3. Repeat when the water has subsided.
  4. After four hours, fill another bucket of water in the hole and note the time the water is gone.

The water subsided in less than 20 minutes.

The soil is well suited for stormwater runoff.

    You can:

    • Above-ground infiltration
    • Underground infiltration

The water subsided in less than 1.5 hours.

The soil is suitable for stormwater runoff.

    You can:

    • Above-ground infiltration
    • Underground infiltration

The water subsided between 1.5 and 4.5 hours.

The soil is moderately suitable for stormwater disconnection.

    You can:

    • Above-ground infiltration
    • Underground infiltration

Multiply infiltration capacity by 1.5 to 2.5

The water has not subsided after 4.5 hours.

The soil is not suitable for stormwater disconnection.

    You can:

    • Do not infiltrate above ground
    • Do not infiltrate underground

    What is possible?

    • Circular use of rainwater
    • To surface water
    • Rainwater sewer in the way
