This monument was erected to commemorate the dropping of thousands of paratroopers from the ^101st Airborne Division on Sept. 17, 1944, north of Son during Operation Market Garden.

An official memorial service is held here every year on May 4 and September 17, with American veterans from that division always present until 2023.
