When and how do we take action?

When are we going to grit?

We grit when slipperiness is expected due to freezing wet road surfaces, sleet, hail and/or snow.

There are 3 types of slipperiness, namely the freezing of a wet road, slipperiness due to precipitation (snow and sleet) and condensation slipperiness.
Condensation slipperiness occurs when the temperature of the road is already very low, often below freezing. Often moisture then precipitates in the form of ice crystals.

What do we scatter?

Despite the different types of slipperiness, the way of fighting slipperiness is always the same. We fight all icing by spreading salt.

Salt lowers the freezing point by several degrees. This makes the road less slippery and thaws existing snow or sleet again. For optimum effect, however, the salt must be driven in by traffic.

When snow falls, we first shovel or brush away the snow and then spread salt.

Who decides that we will grit in Son en Breugel?

The Municipality of Eindhoven manages a number of measurement sensors in the region. From Eindhoven, all gritting crews in the region receive a signal that they should start gritting.
