Spreading routes
Who grits which roads inside and outside built-up areas?
Our gritting crew grits on local roads and bike paths.
Department of Public Works crews grit on state and county roads.
Where do we grit? What is the gritting route?
We grit on main roads and bicycle paths according to a set route.
- First, we grit on transit routes, bus routes, access roads to neighborhoods and the main bicycle paths.
- Then we grit at the doctor's office and pharmacy and the roads near the nursing homes.
- Finally, we grit the streets near shopping centers.

Why don't we grit all the streets?
Road salt works best when it is driven in by (car) tires. Gritting in places where few cars drive does not produce sufficient results. That's why we don't grit those areas and it stays slippery for longer. Snow removal also costs a lot of money. Especially if we have to grit all streets, paths and sidewalks in Son en Breugel. That is why we make choices. We also try to burden the environment as little as possible. Road salt is very harmful to trees, hedges and verges.
We have mapped out the gritting routes so that you generally don't have to drive far from your home to get to a gritting route.
Adapt your driving style to the circumstances: drive extra carefully in the streets where we do not grit.
How much time do we need to grit?
On average, a gritting operation takes 2.5 hours. We strive to finish gritting and possibly clear snow from the routes before the morning rush hour.
Fixed gritting route and tailored actions
Our regular gritting crew is responsible for gritting the roads, streets and bike paths of the regular gritting route.
Does the smoothness persist? Then the district teams can take additional measures. This depends on the specific conditions at the time.
In case of snowfall, for example, the neighborhood teams can make a path/walkway for the stores in the center.
Are the gritting routes always passable?
The weather is sometimes difficult to predict. As a result, it can still suddenly be slippery on gritting routes due to wet sections of road freezing up. The same goes for snowfall and black ice. You should therefore always be alert to road conditions in winter.
